Comeback for DSLR: Pentax K-3 Mark III with sensational image quality

Read Time:2 Minute, 33 Second

SLR cameras are dead? No wonder: The Pentax K-3 Mark III finished the CHIP test center with outstanding image quality and even surpassed the front-runner of the system cameras with APS-C sensor, the mirrorless Fujifilm X-T4 in this discipline.

Pentax is the only camera brand that has always been loyal to single-lens reflex technology (DSLR) and has therefore often been ridiculed by the competition. Wrongly, as it turns out: The new Pentax K-3 Mark III makes most mirrorless cameras look old in the CHIP test center. When it comes to image quality, the Ricoh DSLR is even at the forefront of cameras with APS-C sensors: the Pentax K-3 III shines with its high resolution, attention to detail and low noise even in low light. It owes this to the new 25-megapixel sensor with BSI technology (“Back Side Illumination”) and the likewise new processor. This means that the Pentax draws level with the previous image quality record holders, the mirrorless system cameras from Fujifilm, and like the Fujifilm X-E4the top grade 1.0. The flagship Fujifilm X-T4 , number 1 in the list of the best, received a grade of 1.1 in terms of image quality.

High-quality equipment, proven DSLR ergonomics

With DSLRs like the Pentax K-3III, the light is deflected to the optical viewfinder via a folding mirror. Mirrorless cameras only have an electronic viewfinder.

The DSLR from Pentax also earned a “Very Good” in the “Equipment and Handling” discipline. We particularly like the luxuriously large optical viewfinder with almost 100 percent field of view and 1.05x magnification as well as the DSLR-typical, non-slip, weatherproof housing made of magnesium alloy. The premium equipment includes a 5-axis image stabilizer and pixel shift. With 4k resolution and connection options for a stereo microphone, the film functions are state-of-the-art.

And why did the Pentax K-3 III not make it into the top 3 of the “cameras to APS-C sensor” list? The reason is to be found in the speed rating: The shutter release delay with manual focus is 0.2 seconds, and the series image rate of 10 images per second is also rather average. But if you mainly photograph landscapes and static motifs, you shouldn’t be bothered by it.

The Pentax K-3 III in a set with a Pentax travel zoom

The detailed test data of the Pentax K3-III can be found in our list of “DSLRs and DSLMs up to APS-C-Sensor”. Here the Pentax takes 4th place. But the camera is not a bargain: The body of the Pentax K-3 III is available for around 2,000 euros, in the set with the travel zoom 18-135 WR the price is around 2,500 euros. The Pentax K-3 III is available in black and silver.
